Key Ingredients for Authentic French Croissants
Flour: Use all purpose flour for the best texture. The protein content is perfect for getting the dough’s structure. I recommend sifting the flour through a sieve before using to avoid any lumps.
Butter: High quality unsalted butter is the most important ingredient. The butter should be cold but pliable for lamination. I recommend using a freshly made butter from farmers markets, for the best results!
Milk: Whole milk makes the dough more rich and helps to create a soft dough. You can use milk alternatives, but i would recommend choosing the ones with a higher fat percentage, to get the best results.
Yeast: Active dry yeast is used to leaven the dough. Ensure the yeast is fresh for the best rise.
Sugar: A small pinch of sugar feeds the yeast (to anctivate it) and it adds a hint of sweetness. You can also use fresh honey to get the same result. If you want to make sweeter croissants, you can use a bigger amount.
Salt: Salt helps the flavor of the croissants and balances the sweetness. We only add a little, but it really makes them better. For a salty touch you can use ground course salt to top th croissants before baking.
Eggs: Eggs are used for the egg wash because the are giving the croissants a beautiful golden color, after they bake.

How To Serve Croissants?
Serve these best croissants with a cup of coffee or tea. They are also very delicious with a spread of jam, butter or Nutella. You can also use them as sandwich bread, and add your favorite cheese or slices of ham!
French croissants can a sweet or savory snack. Traditionally they are dunked in cappuccino for breakfast in the morning, but i also love to dip them in delicious creamy hot chocolate.
Expert Tips
- Cold Butter: Keep the butter cold when doing the lamination process. If the butter starts to soften, chill the dough in the fridge before continuing. Just wrap the butter in plastic wrap, to make it easier.
- Resting Time: Allow the dough to rest between folds to relax the gluten. This makes rolling easier and helps create flaky layers.
- Egg Wash: Put the egg wash on top gently and evenly. This gives the croissants a beautiful golden brown color and adds a slight shine. You can also top the croissants with almond slices or your favorite seeds for an extra touch.

Substitutions and Variations
Almond croissants: For an almond croissant you can spread a layer of almond paste on the dough before rolling it up. This adds a nutty flavor that is perfect for croissants. You can also top them with almond slices for more flavor and a crunch!
Savory variation: If you prefer something savory you can fill the dough with slices of ham and cheese before baking. This transforms the classic croissant into a satisfying savory pastry, ideal for lunch or a light dinner. The combination of melted cheese and ham with the flaky croissant dough creates a deliciously rich and savory treat.
Use your favorite filling: To make a sweeter croissant you can use fruit jam (I love raspberry, and strawberry) or custard as a filling. Spread a thin layer of your favorite fruit preserves or pastry cream on the dough before rolling it up. This adds a burst of flavor with each bite, making for a delightful variation.

Chocolate: Adding chocolate to the dough before baking will give you a delicious chocolate croissant that is also known as “pain au chocolat.” This variation is one of my favorites! I also love to use hazelnut or chocolate spread for a more creamy version.
Additional toppings: You can drizzle the baked croissants with melted chocolate or sprinkle them with powdered sugar. You can also experiment with different types of chocolate for example dark, milk, or white.
How To Store Homemade Fresh Croissants ?
Store any leftover croissants in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage you can also freeze the croissants in a single layer and then transfer put to a freezer bag. Reheat the frozen croissants in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes until warm.

Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup cold unsalted butter
- 1 cup whole milk, warm
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
- 1/4 cup white granulated sugar (or honey)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
- Make the Dough: In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Prepare the Butter Block: Place the cold butter between two sheets of parchment paper. Use a rolling pin to flatten it into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. Chill in the refrigerator until firm but pliable.
- Laminate the Dough: Roll out the dough into a rectangle larger than the butter block. Place the butter block in the center and fold the dough over it, sealing the edges. Roll out the dough into a large rectangle and fold it into thirds like a letter. Chill for 30 minutes. Repeat this rolling and folding process two more times, chilling between each fold.
